When my grandparents were 16 and 18-years-old, they eloped to Las Vegas, Nevada. Because they were born in the early 1900’s, such was considered “inappropriate” by their families.
But they didn’t care. They had each other — and the “risk” of pursuing love was worth it. 71 years later, Robert and Genevieve Brechtel remain happily married. And to this day, they take risks together — sometimes big, sometimes small.
Some of the risks they took were by choice, such as having nine children (which led to over 150 grandchildren). Other risks, such as gambling on ways to treat my 88-year-old grandmother’s Diabetes, mini-strokes, and Restless Leg Syndrome, were forced. Throughout it all, one thing has remained the same: they make decisions together.
A recent decision was to use cannabidiol (or CBD) oil salve, which is derived from the cannabis plant. Though marijuana remains taboo in the United States, largely due to its Schedule 1 classification by the Federal government, it is actually very medicinal.
It took some time to convince Bob, 91, and Gen, 88, of this, but with their doctor’s approval, they agreed to give it a shot. The decision to use CBD oil is actually one of the safest risks they’ve ever made, and I’ll explain why below.
In the history of Earth, 0 people have overdosed on cannabis. Furthermore, there are over 100 peer-reviewed studies proving that CBD oil can benefit various types of cancer, including skin, prostate, and breast.
Studies also suggest it is beneficial for inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, and spasms. Perhaps most importantly, using CBD oil will not leave one feeling “stoned,” as it does not contain the psychoactive component THC.
Equipped with this knowledge, both of my grandparents realized they had nothing to lose. With the help of my mother, who visits them morning and night, they began to apply Curaderm and CBD oil to their skin cancer spots. The results, though in their infancy, speak for themselves.

The most notable effects include:
- The diminishment of skin cancer spots
- Rapid healing (rarely witnessed among seniors)
- Healthy, pink skin which is a sign of new cell growth
It will likely be months before the skin cancer spots are completely gone, but the early success has encouraged both of them to continue supplementing with CBD oil and Curaderm.
A Shifting Paradigm
For years, my grandparents trusted in the allopathic medical system. At times, they took up to 20 pharmaceutical pills each, every day. Even five years ago, they weren’t interested in hearing about holistic therapies or the potential of natural therapies. That recently changed, however.
Last summer, my grandmother was making her way to the bathroom when she fell. The impact shattered her hip. For an entire hour, she lay on the floor, moaning and in pain — until my grandfather found her. To say he was devastated was an understatement.
Fortunately, she was able to receive a hip replacement almost immediately. That was when the real trials began. To monitor her recovery, my grandmother was placed in a local nursing home. Being separated from her family, as well as being constantly groggy from painkillers, was almost too much. She began to look and act like those around her, and it scared my grandfather.
“This place is full of zombies,” he lamented to me one day. I tried to put myself in his shoes, and I was mortified by what I saw. People his age (and younger) spent their days wandering the halls, staring lifelessly at each other and the walls. They were sedated and merely existing as if their lives were over. None of us wanted that for my grandmother, so she was promptly moved to their home in Vale, South Dakota.
After months of round-the-clock monitoring, my grandma recovered. Being immobile resulted in other problems, however, including Restless Leg Syndrome. The doctor’s solution was to prescribe her Ropinirole, which is a medication for Parkinson’s Disease. While this temporarily improved her symptoms, it also exacerbated her short-term memory loss. Once he recognized this, my grandpa began to research holistic therapies.
He was both excited and saddened by what he found. After years of believing that pharmaceutical drugs are the answer, he learned that, more often than not, the best remedies are found in nature. On the plus side, this made him and my grandmother more willing to try alternative therapies, such as CBD oil.
CBD for Seniors
Because my grandparents grew up in the 1930’s, a time when cannabis prohibition was just being introduced, they were not taught about the crop’s many uses or benefits. Of course, they weren’t the only ones.
Today, many seniors have a negative opinion of cannabis, and it is largely due to propaganda (such as Reefer Madness) which was released during their former years. This is detrimental, simply because CBD has the potential to improve their quality of life.
Studies have concluded that CBD reduces pain, promotes bone growth, benefits anxiety and depression, has neuroprotective properties, reduces the risk of arterial blockages, and can even improve recovery after traumatic events, such as strokes. As a result, there is no question that CBD could benefit seniors who tend to suffer from joint pain, memory loss, and atherosclerosis.
Though it took many years for my grandparents to consider holistic therapies, their recent experience using CBD oil salve and Curaderm has convinced them of the benefits.
When interviewing them for this article, they expressed hope that others might learn from their experiences (both good and bad), and find natural therapies that contribute to long-term healing.
