I had never heard of the small town of Sebastopol, California until I was on my way there. On the morning of Friday, January 26, 2018, I was in the car with my parents driving west to Sonoma County from Sacramento en route to my first stay in a residential rehab facility.
Clothes were hastily thrown into my bag. The hangover was hitting me hard from the night before. I had finally reached a breaking point. I could not go on like this. I could drink and use no longer. I needed to get my life together. But I could not do it on my own.

When I first went to treatment I was utterly mystified. I had no idea what was coming, but I was sure it was going to be bad.
Mostly, I just thought life was finished. As someone who is on the young end of the baby boomers, I just assumed life consisted of drinking and at least a little weed. All that was definitely done.
I quickly learned that there was an entirely new road ahead of me. I still wasn’t convinced it was going to be a good road, or a road that was going to be all that much fun, but I could at least see that there were possibilities ahead.

After being a drunk for 16 years, I was shocked to find out that I struggled miserably in social situations in sobriety.
What had happened?
I felt like the Ice Man whenever I got around people – I felt like an alien that had just landed and needed to take a crash course in human behaviors or I was going to die.
Then, it slowly dawned on me that I had been running from any kind of stress for over 20 years, big or small.
