Stop Thinking, Drink Water - and other lessons from Kilimanjaro

I never expected I’d be in the back of a taxi, in a thunderstorm, on my way to a hospital in rural Tanzania. But there I was, the night before I was about to leave for an 8-day trek up to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro on my way to Arusha Lutheran Medical Center.

I’ve come up with crazy plans before so my idea to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro before I started my semester study abroad in South Africa was never out of the question. I found a tour company, booked my flights, bought all my gear, and boarded a plane bound for Nairobi, Kenya where I would stay for two nights before taking a bus to Arusha, Tanzania to begin my trek.

Top 3 Ways I Greatly Reduced My Anxiety Traveling to Italy

Top 3 Ways I Greatly Reduced My Anxiety Traveling to Italy

“Lower back pain is completely normal,” the indifferent E.R. doctor said to me as he was writing out a prescription for pain medication.

He ignored my comments that I don’t take medicine and refused to actually examine me.

Not once in the 3 minutes I was in his presence did he lay a finger on my body OR even listen to the words that were coming out of my mouth.

I was not supposed to feel like this.

I was only 27 years old.

Yet, here I was… in the emergency room of a hospital in Southern California feeling as if someone was violently sticking a knife into my lower back – REPEATEDLY. I dealt with the pain for days as I walked around hunched over in pain.

How I Traveled to Costa Rica to Escape AutoImmune Disease

How I Traveled to Costa Rica to Escape AutoImmune Disease

From the time you are a little kid, dreaming is all you know. You dream of your future family, your future job, your future children, and you even dream of your future house.

In those dreams, you never harbor pain or illness and you never harbor disastrous chaos. Yet, once you reach your dream life, you realize that disastrous chaos comes along with the dream that you signed up for, and the disastrous chaos is a part of the magical journey.

For myself, the disastrous chaos that I chose to embody along my own journey was illness, and that illness led me to find the most beautiful place on earth: Costa Rica.

How a Missionary Trip to Honduras Rocked My Faith

How a Missionary Trip to Honduras Rocked My Faith

As someone who grew up in a Christian home and took ownership of my faith from a relatively young age, it’s easy to say that I have always believed that God can do anything.

God makes miracles happen every day. God equips those He calls to further His kingdom and carries out the work He has started in each of us who have put our faith in Him to completion. Yet, it can be surprising when God shows you how little faith you really have – and how great your need for Him is.

As a sophomore in college, I signed up for a week-long backpacking mission trip in a remote, mountainous region of Honduras.

Rediscovering Myself Spreading Husband’s Ashes Along Jemez Mountain Trail

Rediscovering Myself Spreading Husband's Ashes Along Jemez Mountain Trail

Having been born in Southern California, I grew up primarily in suburbia. Yet I’m no stranger to the wide open road. Every summer my family (Father, Mother, Brother, family dog, and me) would pile into our gigantic Chrysler and head across the country to visit my grandparents on a farm in Wisconsin.

These road trips had a profound influence on my view of life. What I remember most about these expeditions was that while we were out there, we could truly let down our guard and experience life without concern about what someone else might “think” of us.

Very Bad Breakup to Poetry in Paris: A Journey to Re-Find Myself

Very Bad Breakup to Poetry in Paris A Journey to Re-Find Myself

When I was younger, I always had a plan for how my life was going to play out. I was going to go to college and get my degree, fall in love, get married, have kids, and find a career that I was truly passionate about.

I would be a writer, spending my days lounging at my desk with a cup of coffee, spilling my heart onto the page. Of course, all of this would be done by the time I was 30.

It’s funny to look back on life and compare my optimistic views of my youth to the reality of today. But when I was in college, I thought that I was on my way to those goals. Maybe I had fallen slightly off-course, but who hadn’t?

As a sophomore in college, I experienced an act of violence against myself which tinged the remainder of my college experience. Rather than discuss it with others, or head to therapy, I chose to self-medicate.

How to Overcome Co-Dependency and Be Fearless Alone in Bergen

How to Overcome Co-Dependency and Be Fearless Alone in Bergen

Bergen, Norway: A history-steeped city that lies nestled between the serene Byfjorden fjord and the majestic Seven Mountains.

I came to this city as a twenty year-old who couldn’t figure out how to stop letting anyone wander into my life and stake a claim on it.

The four days I spent hiking in the mountains—sweating a ton, stumbling upon hidden statues and mountain-top lakes, getting lost and found—taught me how to do justice to myself.

Intermittent Fasting During My 3 Day Hike in Greece – Transformative Travel

“Oh my gosh… I would have DIED!”

“You are crazy.”

These are just two of the several comments I received when I had mentioned that I had embarked on a 15 kilometer hike on a hot and sunny 91 degree day in Crete, Greece.

While I would like to claim that this was all eloquently thought out, planned, and I prepared for… the truth of the story is my LACK of planning ended up manifesting into a magical 3 day hike through a gorge and along the southern coast of Crete — with a hefty dose of intermittent fasting.
