5 Things to Know BEFORE Trying intermittent Fasting

5 Things to Know BEFORE Trying intermittent Fasting

“You can fire up your metabolism with Intermittent Fasting”

I saw this from a fitness expert I follow…

He’s a fitness trainer. Athletic type. Until I saw him say it, I didn’t know that intermittent fasting could affect metabolism.

He wrote about his workout routines on his blog. And he wasn’t spending hours at the gym. But he was intermittent fasting a few times a week. And getting RESULTS.

Wow, I thought.

Fitness types usually recommend calorie restriction. But he was getting even better results specifically with intermittent fasting. That’s when I realized: Maybe I’d approached my fitness goals backwards?

How Ecstatic Dance in Bali Changed My Life

bali dance tips

Before you imagine me as a shy wallflower, lurking meekly in the shadows when music is playing, rest assured that is not me. I happily dance at live music gigs. I float around merrily at festivals. I’ve busted a move in my kitchen and in the middle of a grocery store aisle.

Still, ecstatic dance changed my life.

For the uninitiated, let me explain: Ecstatic dance events are organized often through yoga studios as an invitation for participants to enjoy free-form expressions of movement with minimal instruction and great music.

The lights are low. It’s usually really hot. Good ecstatic dance events have scores of people, enough to fill a room but not so many that you don’t have the space to move your limbs. These events are often held in the evening.

I was reunited with traditional alternative medicines my family practiced when money was short

transformational travel south america

I am not a religious person by any means. Usually when someone asks me, I respond with, “Well I was raised Catholic, BUT,”, and that’s a good enough answer for them. I came to Belize to study Health, Belief and Ethnomedicine.

As an anthropology major with a focus in medical anthropology, I was very interested in understanding the role biomedicine plays in these communities as compared to the role traditional medicine plays.

I did not, however, realize how much of healing and medicine is based in a person’s spirit, and I certainly didn’t think my study abroad would double as a spiritual retreat. From cupping, to meditation in caves, I rediscovered a part of myself that had been denied by the binary systems of the Global North.

Top 5 Success Attributes to Become a Fashion Designer – When I Grow Up Series

top 5 success attributes, when I grow up tips

When I was young, I was sure I would grow up to be a famous fashion designer living in New York. From the time I was two, I would pick out my own outfits (often ones that no one should have let me out of the house with) and soon began to fill up notebooks and binders of my original designs.

I would watch shows like Project Runway and What Not to Wear to gain inspiration and gain more knowledge about fashion.

Year after year I would ask my parents for a sewing machine to start making my own clothes until they eventually gave in. I loved going shopping and creating outfits for myself and my mom.

I spent my summers creating collages of beautiful clothing and piecing together outfits from magazine clippings and print outs. I would proudly tell anyone who asked me, I was going to be a fashion designer when I grew up.

5 Unexpected Ways Traveling to China Changed my World View

I’ve been traveling to China a few times a year for my job and it has changed my world view in some unexpected ways.

I think previously I could have been defined as what you’d call a snobbish traveler from my years traveling in North America, Europe and Southern Africa.

I thought that I knew it all. China has an unexpected way of flipping the script and my travels there deeply impacted me on how I see the world.

Transformational Travel in Life-Changing Monaco

Since we had arrived in the dark of night, I had literally no idea what it would look like outside my window when I awoke the next morning.

Even though I was fighting a moderate case of jet lag, the sun shining through the open window proved to be an irresistible draw. So I mustered my strength and enthusiasm, threw off the sheets, and wandered over to the daylight flooding into the upstairs bedroom.

Top 5 Attributes to Become a Successful Singer

Top 5 Attributes to Become a Successful Singer

Growing up, I wanted to be a singer. The dream originated as early as I can remember. Every night, I would fall asleep listening to FM radio on a small boombox in my bedroom in the small town where I grew up.

Although I was very young, I loved music and connected to it on a visceral, emotional level. I would stay up as long as I could because I just loved to lay there listening to the hooks of the pop songs.

Since I was listening to early-to-mid 1990s Top 40 radio, I fell asleep focused on the words and vocal melodies of Tom Petty, Sarah McLachlan, The Goo Goo Dolls, Third Eye Blind, Counting Crows, Fleetwood Mac, Radiohead, Alanis Morissette, Jewel, Elton John, and many others.

I’d close my eyes and imagine I was on a stage singing the lyrics that resonated with me so much, under spotlights, connecting with a crowd of people.

How My Life Changed When I Put My Spanish to Use – Transformative Travel

When I was 8 years old, I dreaded Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3-4:30pm. My mom, like any mom, wanted nothing but the best for me and my brother, so she signed both of us up for after-school Spanish classes.

She wanted to give us both the gift of speaking a foreign language, and she hoped that one day we both would obtain fluency in a language other than our native tongue.

Looking back on my childhood, I am eternally grateful for the opportunity that she gave me, but I sure did not feel that way when I was in the moment.

I complained about going, fought her endlessly about it, and did anything I could to get out of the lessons. I would always complain about having to go to “extra school” after the regular school day and about how learning a second language was pointless.

Against my will, I continued in the lessons until my school began to incorporate Spanish into their curriculum a few years later.

How I lived in a remote village in the Black Forest in Germany in a raw vegan Ashram

As an American, it can be hard to distinguish between what is a temporary health fad and what could potentially be a lifelong health transformation.

I could sense I was not going down the right path when it came to my lifestyle, specifically, I was worried about my diet and the impact my environment had on me.

I have a very typical life when looking at the spectrum for 26-year-old Americans. I am a graduate student. I wake up at six. I make a pot of coffee for my whole family myself.

I drink two cups of coffee with a “natural” oat bar that oddly also has 15 grams of sugar. I get in my car; drive 15 minutes to the university. Drink more coffee. Go to class. More coffee. Write. Coffee. Sandwich. Coffee. Car. House. Netflix. Sleep. Repeat.
